How to set up shipping rate in Shopify

After creating and publishing products, setting up shipping rates is essential. You want to price competitively without overcharging customers or losing money on delivery.

These are the prices your customers pay you for shipping. Branvas charges a flat rate of $8.99 per order to both US and international destinations. You can choose to:

  • Match Branvas pricing – charge customers $8.99 and break even on shipping

  • Charge more – set rates higher than $8.99 to profit on shipping

  • Charge less or offer free shipping – a great marketing strategy (you cover the difference)

How do set up shipping rates?

  1. Go to Connected Store in the left sidebar.

  2. If you have connected to Shopify store, your default shipping rate will appear here, and click "Change" next to the shipping rate. A dialog will appear showing your three strategy options.

  3. Choose a strategy that fits your pricing approach (details below), then enter your desired rate if applicable.

  4. Click Save and publish to store to push the setting to your Shopify store. Your new shipping rate will be live immediately.

Shipping Strategies

Free Shipping

Absorb the $8.99 — bake it into your product price

Customers see $0 at checkout. You cover the $8.99 fulfillment cost by pricing your products slightly higher to offset it.

  • Reduces cart abandonment - shoppers love "free shipping"

  • Simple, no surprises at checkout

Best for: Stores with higher-margin products where $8.99 is easy to absorb, or brands competing on a premium/DTC feel.

Flat Rate

One fixed fee — default is $8.99

Every order is charged the same shipping fee regardless of cart size or weight. The default rate ($8.99) passes Branvas's fulfillment cost directly to the customer with no markup and no loss.

  • Transparent and predictable for customers

  • Zero shipping cost to you at the default rate

Best for: Stores with a consistent average order size. You can also set a rate above $8.99 to earn a shipping margin on every order.

Conditional

Paid below a cart total, free above - nudges larger carts

Customers pay a shipping fee on orders below your set dollar threshold, and get free shipping once they hit or exceed it. This creates a built-in incentive to add more items.

  • Encourages higher average order values

  • Competitive — "Free shipping on orders over $X" is a proven conversion tactic

Best for: Stores looking to grow average order value (AOV). A common rule of thumb is to set the threshold 20–30% above your current average order value.
